Former Harding Mayor Nicolas Platt is actively exploring a run for the GOP nomination for Congress in the 11th district, where Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen is stepping down after 24 years in Washington. Sources say that he will make his decision sooner rather than later.
Platt, 62, now a township committeeman and a longtime Frelinghuysen ally, has worked in public relations and finance before retiring. He sough the Republican nomination for Morris County Freeholder in 2017, but lost to Heather Darling by 1,018 votes.
He is a descendant of Marcellus Hartley, a merchant who was sent by the Lincoln administration to Europe to procure guns for the Union Army. He is part of the Dodge and Rockefeller families, and his ancestors owned the Remington Arms Company and a majority stake in the New York Times.
