Sumter bashes Hugin on Space Endorsement

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin’s endorsement by a conservative Assemblyman who has embraced the confederate flag and referred to a woman opponent as a “bitch” has drawn the ire of Assembly Democratic Conference Leader Shavonda Sumter (D-Paterson).

“With the endorsement by Assemblyman Parker Space, Bob Hugin has started his campaign aligning himself to the same bigotry and disparaging attitude toward women we’ve seen from Donald Trump,” Sumter said. “If anyone needed more proof Bob Hugin would just be a follower of the Trump administration if he were elected to the United States Senate, his acceptance of an endorsement from Parker Space is it.”

Space (R-Wantage) drew considerable news coverage last year when he was photographed with a confederate flag.  He was the only legislator to abstain on a vote condemn the display of that flag.  During his re-election campaign last year, POLITCO published a story based on a recording of Space referring to opponent Kate Matteson as am “elitist one percenter, an elitist who’s a bitch.”

“It is clear from the very beginning that Bob Hugin will look to permeate Donald Trump’s racism in New Jersey and support his policies that disproportionately harm communities of color – we simply cannot allow that. Thousands have led the charge to elect people who have stood up to racism and hatred from Alabama to Virginia to New Jersey. We will not let up now and we will not stay quiet.”
