A fixture of Union City local politics and a loyal member of Mayor Brian Stack’s team has decided not to seek re-election to a fifth term on the Union City Board of Commissioners.

Tilo Rivas, who has held local office in Union City since 2001, will give up his commissioner post in the upcoming May municipal election and will focus on his other position as a Hudson County Freeholder.

Rivas, one of Stack’s closest political allies, is now 70 and wants to lighten his load a little and concentrate solely on his county government responsibilities.

Born in the Dominican Republic, he immigrated to the United States in 1970.  Rivas won a seat on the Union City Board of Education in 2001 and was elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2002.  He was elected freeholder in 2004 was re-elected four times.
