Hirsh Singh, a software engineer from Atlantic County who was prepared to spend $2 million on a bid for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, has agreed to switch to the race for Frank LoBiondo’s congressional seat, sources say.
Singh spent $1 million on an unsuccessful campaign for Governor in 2017, finishing third in the Republican primary.
Republicans have been unable to attract a top tier candidate to replace LoBiondo, putting the GOP in danger of losing a seat they had held easily for the last 24 years. Sources say that party leaders in South Jersey have agreed to endorse Singh for Congress. The front-runner to win the seat for the Democrats is State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis).
That removes the only well-funded challenger to Hugin in the Senate primary. Attorney Dana Wefer and businessman Brian Goldberg are expected to wage grass-roots, low-budget Senate bids.
