Scharfenberger is new Freeholder

By David Wildstein, February 03 2018 3:38 pm

As expected, former Middletown Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger has won a special election convention for Monmouth County Freeholder.  He will replace Serena DiMaso, who took her seat in the State Assembly last month, and will run for the unexpired term in November.

Republicans nominated Hazlet Mayor Sue Kiley to run for the seat currently held by GOP Freeholder John Curley.  Curley, who was censured by his colleagues last year amidst allegations of sexual harassment, has not said if he will run for re-election — either in the primary against Kiley or as an independent in the general election.

Scharfenberger’s swearing in as a freeholder creates a vacancy for his seat on the  Middletown Township Committee.  The municipal party organization will submit three names and the council will select one to fill his unexpired term.
