Tom Malinowski has won the Hunterdon County Democratic line for U.S. Congress in New Jersey’s seventh district. He defeated banker Linda Weber by a vote of 96-42, with 25 votes combined for the other candidates at the Democratic convention in Frenchtown this morning.
This is the first organizational win for Malinowski, a former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State in the Obama administration. Weber has the organization lines in Somerset and Essex counties.
Hunterdon County Democratic chair Arlene Quinones-Perez had issued a personal endorsement of Weber, who got just 26% of the county committee vote.
Attorney Goutam Jois finished third, followed by environmental activist Dave Pringle and attorney Scott Salmon. Self-funder Lisa Mandelblatt and 2016 nominee Peter Jacob received no votes. The seven Democrats are seeking to challenge Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton) in the fall.
Union County, where Democrats have typically awarded their line based on a vote of the municipal chairs in the congressional district. No vote is expected until after the special election for County Chairman on February 21. Democrats still have lines to award in Morris and Warren counties
