Lance, MacArthur on FBI memo

A decision by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence to release a previously-classified memo concerning the Federal Bureau of Investigation has sparked comment from two Republican congressmen from New Jersey.

“The allegations in this memo are serious, but must not be used to impugn the good men and women at the FBI or discredit the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Anytime we are talking about abuse of government, the American people need to know, especially when there is an allegation of an American citizen’s rights being curtailed,” said Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River).  “Congress must not allow this to become a distraction from the work we need to do to continue to grow our economy and secure our national defense.”

Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton) says that “public policy is always best served with transparency” and says that the memo should be reviewed and debated in the public arena.

“As one of the first Republican lawmakers to review a ‘counter memo’ authored by Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, I call on its immediate public release as well so that the American people and lawmakers can compare and contrast these two documents.  This conversation will inevitably guide the congressional debate on reforms and improved accountability to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act,” Lance said.
