Hedge Fund Manager seeks Frelinghuysen seat

Antony Ghee, a 47-year-old hedge fund manager and Army Reserve captain, will seek the Republican nomination in New Jersey’s 11th district with the endorsements of the Essex and Passaic County Republican organizations.

Some Republicans think Ghee has a compelling story: raised by a single mother with his father in prison, he received a law degree from Howard University and a masters in securities and financial regulation from Georgetown Law.  He worked for a New York law firm before moving on to a hedge fund where he manages more than a billion dollars in assets.  He also serves in the U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps.

GOP insiders say that Ghee has the same kind of outside-the-box life story and fundraising contacts that made Mikie Sherrill and Tamara Harris attractive candidates for the Democrats.

The Totowa resident is married to Michelle Thornton Ghee, the senior vice president of media sales at the Viacom-BET Networks. He is also the author of a book about how professional athletes go broke falling after con artists take advantage of their wealth and fame.

If he wins,Ghee would be the first Black Republican to ever represent the northeast in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) and attorney Martin Hewitt are the only announced candidates for the Republican nomination.  Trucking company executive Jerry Langer, former Harding Mayor Nicolas Platt, and Morris County Freeholder Christie Myers are also mulling possible House bids.
