One potential candidate for the 2021 Republican gubernatorial nomination lashed out at Gov. Phil Murphy today for promoting a plan to help New Jerseyans protect their federal property tax deduction.
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden also told Murphy to “stop campaigning against President Trump and get to work governing New Jersey.”
Murphy was in Marlboro last Friday to push for a plan that would allow New Jersey residents to pay property taxes as charitable contributions to their municipalities as a way of preserving a deduction capped at $10,000 by Trump last year.
“The problem for New Jersey’s overburdened taxpayers originates in Trenton, not with President Trump’s historic income tax reforms,” said Golden. “New Jersey’s ridiculously high-income tax and property taxes are the problem.”
Golden, who is also the Monmouth County Republican Chairman, called Murphy’s plan a shell game.
“It is fitting that the Governor chose to release this ill-conceived plan with Marlboro,” Golden said. “Mayor (Jon) Hornick as the mayor opted out of the countywide revaluation plan, meaning taxpayers across Monmouth subsidize the tax bill in Marlboro as home values have increased while not paying fair share – but then again I guess Mayor Hornick calls that charity ”
Some Republican insiders have put Golden on a long-list of potential candidates to challenge Murphy in 2021.
