Schaer taking on gangs & social media

By David Wildstein, January 19 2018 11:25 am

Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D-Passaic) will announce his plan to crack down on street gags at a news conference on Tuesday.

Schaer is expected to unveil comprehensive legislation that will challenge a street gang’s ability to recruit minors through social media – a problem New Jersey cities face with increasing frequency.

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora, Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik and Passaic Police Chief Luis Guzman will join Schaer for his announcement.

Schaer, who is also the Passaic City Council President, was recently replaced as Assembly Budget Committee Chairman by the new legislative leadership.  While his clout in the legislature has been curtailed, he has also seen two former aides assume top positions in Gov. Phil Murphy’s front office.
