POLITICO: Corrado blocking Way

Update: POLITICO New Jersey is now reporting that Corrado plans to release Way’s nomination — eventually.

State Sen. Kristin Corrado (R-Totowa) is using senatorial courtesy to block the nomination of Tahesha Way as New Jersey Secretary of State, according to a report from POLITICO New Jersey’s Matt Friedman.

Way, a former Passaic County Freeholder from Wayne, was nominated last month by Gov. Phil Murphy.  Under an unwritten agreement, the Senate will not consider a nomination that has not received sign off from the home county Senator.

Corrado could have two motives: the prevention of Way as a 2021 opponent, if the 40th district becomes more competitive under the next map; and to stake out her ground as a conservative Republican as it relates to voting rights issues.

In his inaugural address, Murphy pledged to “tear down barriers to voting” — one of several clear shots at the Trump administration, and one  that resonates well with the new Governor’s base.

Corrado used courtesy earlier this year to block the renomination of a political rival, Passaic County Republican Chairman John Traier, to serve on the New Jersey Civil Rights Commission.
