Alfred Palermo, who was Ray Lesniak’s first Republican opponent for State Senator, passed away on Monday at the age of 90.  His death came on Lesniak’s last day in the Senate.

A Linden real estate and insurance broker, Palermo ran in a June 1983 special election after the criminal conviction of State Sen. John Gregorio.  Lesniak won 65%-28%.  He challenged Lesniak again in the November general and lost 65%-33%.   In 1992, Palermo was the Republican nominee for Congress in New Jersey’s 10th district, losing to Rep. Donald Payne, Sr. by a 78%-20% margin.

Palermo served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946.
