Guadagno ally wants to stay

The Republican mayor of Gov.-elect Phil Murphy’ home town is lobbying to keep his $120,000-a-year state job with the New Jersey Business Action Center and the Office for Planning Advocacy.  I’m told that Middletown Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger has asked mutual friends to help save his job.  That could be a tough sell, since Scharfenberger works directly for the Secretary of State, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.

Scharfenberger is also a potential candidate to fill a vacancy on the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders.  Serena DiMaso will resign next week to take her seat as a new member of the State Assembly.   If Republicans don’t give the DiMaso seat to Scharfenberger, he might have a second chance when they look for someone to replace – or run against – embattled incumbent John Curley.

Scharfenberger was also expecting to wind up in the Assembly, but he dropped out of the race last year when Assemblywoman Amy Handlin dropped her bid for the GOP State Senate nomination.
