Jerry Green will keep his State Assembly seat for now, despite speculation that his resignation as Union County Democratic County Chairman for health reasons would also create a vacancy in the 22nd district.
If the 78-year-old Green does resign, it is widely expected that Plainfield, the largest town in the district, would fight to keep it. Some have suggested that Mayor Adrian Mapp wants the job. So does Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr, who is now the Acting County Chair. Mahr had wanted the Assembly seat in 2015, when Linda Stender declined to seek re-election, but party leaders instead went with Rahway Mayor James Kennedy.
Green, a fixture in Union County politics for decades, is the Dean of the State Assembly. He was not in Trenton to take the oath earlier this month, but has since been sworn in.
