Ex-Obama appointee backs Welle

Civil Rights leader Sue Fulton, who as President Obama’s appointee to the West Point Board of Visitors pushed for the rights of sexual harassment and assault victims, has endorsed Josh Welle for Congress in New Jersey’s fourth district.

Welle, an Annapolis graduate who served twelve years in the U.S. Navy, is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge 19-term Rep. Chris Smith (R-Hamilton).

“Josh and I share the same values from our military backgrounds: a dedication to service, to the Constitution, and to doing the right thing regardless the cost,” Fulton said in a statement released by the Welle campaign.  “WE need military veterans in Congress, people like Josh who have deployed into harm’s way, who have worked as part of a team to achieve results.”

Fulton, an Asbury Park resident, was a member of the U.S. Military Academy’s first class to admit women.  She later led Knights Out, which advocated for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and is president of a group of retired military officers that advocates for transgender military service.
