Christie lawyer will run Murphy’s Authorities Unit

Gov.-elect Phil Murphy will keep one of Chris Christie’s top lawyers to oversee New Jersey Transit, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and more than fifty other independent authorities and commissions.

Mary Maples will serve as Deputy Chief Counsel for Authorities.  In that role, she will assume one of the voting seats on the New Jersey Transit Board.  She joined Christie’s staff two years ago after spending nearly twelve years at the Central Intelligence Agency – the last six as an Assistant General Counsel.

As Senior Counsel in the Authorities Unit, Maples represented Christie at meetings of NJ Transit, the Port Authority, University Hospital, the Educational Facilities Authority, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, the South Jersey Transportation Authority and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.

The 39-year-old Middletown resident is the wife of Jared Maples, who serves in Christie’s cabinet as the Acting Director of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness.  Murphy announced late last month that he was keeping Maples in his cabinet.

Her father is Thomas Evans, a Nutley Town Commissioner and the Democratic Municipal Chairman who backed Barbara Buono in 2013.  Evans is an ally of Montclair Democratic Municipal Chairman Brendan Gill, who used to represent Nutley when he held the District 5 Freeholder seat.

She succeeds John Spinello in the post previously known as Director of the Authorities Unit.
