Democratic congressional candidate Tom Malinowski was a paid contributor to Al Jazeera, according to financial disclosures filed with the U.S. House of Representatives.
On the surface, there’s nothing terribly wrong with that. But it does create an interesting question for Malinowski, who cites his foreign policy credentials as a senior official in the Obama State Department: does he believe Al Jazeera has editorial independence from the Qatar government or not?
Al Jazeera pushed back last summer on criticism that the state-funded television network was taking sides in Qatar’s dispute with Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.
Politico Magazine published an article written by Malinowski today touting his plan to protect U.S. elections from foreign influences.
Malinowski is wants to run against Rep. Leonard Lance, but must first get through a competitive Democratic primary.
Malinowski left the State Department in January 2017 after serving as Assistant U.S. Secretary of State. He reported $1,000 in income from Al Jazeera, as well as speaking fees for the East West Center and earnings from the Washington Post and The Atlantic magazine for articles he wrote.

Malinowski’s 25 years of experience in government compares favorably to the experience of all the other 6 contenders. His career has been entirely focused on human rights issues–I would not call that snobby or elitist personally.
